Our experts use US Military TRADOC PAM 385-1 guidelines to inspect, test, repair, modify, update, and rebuild existing O-Courses for JROTC & ROTC programs and some of the most legendary US Military Courses nationwide.
Quick Links: Inspections & Repairs - Expert Maintenance - Fall Safety

So many of the formerly prestigious courses located at US Military nationwide have fallen into a state of disrepair where they can no longer be used for training and PT and become a sad eyesore. Obstacle Builders can completely demo, repair, replace, or modify these courses extensively to bring them up-to-date and make them a vital part of our military training regimen!

Harsh weather takes a toll on courses all over the nation - we've built and repaired courses in freezing cold Alaska and the hottest climates in Arizona and Texas to the southeast coast where hot, humid, salty conditions can deteriorate elements quickly. We replace ropes, cargo nets, safety nets and other elements that have become worn and unsafe with the newest, best materials available.

Sometimes an obstacle course is just too far gone for even experts like us to save. We can dismantle, remove, regrade, and install a brand new course with updated elements to serve your needs - military, first responders, or civilian clients all across the USA.
Impact Abatement:
A device, material, or system designed to prevent injury to persons by absorbing impacts through localized material deformation or displacement, to absorb the energy of an impact in a way that reduces the magnitudes of peak impact force and peak acceleration.
Obstacle Builders' (Standard Maintenance & Limited Warranty)
The additional level of care and ongoing maintenance to keep an obstacle course safe while also withstanding weathering as long as possible can be a difficult task to require of your existing grounds crew / maintenance staff. TRI PHX LLC offers a bi-annual Expert Maintenance Program to assist your staff in protecting your investment and keeping the course safe for use. Please note: While our Expert Maintenance Program consists of in-depth inspection and maintenance of your course, daily visual inspections and ongoing maintenance are still required by your staff as listed in your contract under “Element Maintenance”.
One Year Expert Maintenance Program Includes
Twice-yearly inspection and maintenance of your entire Obstacle Course including:
Inspection: Comprehensive checklist of all elements in accordance with US Military TRADOC Pamphlet 385-1 starting at page 132, Table C1. PLEASE NOTE: TRADOC PAM 385-1 checklist will be followed as a guideline, however the obstacles outlined are significantly different in size, shape, and construction than those that are installed for your program.
All wooden elements will be inspected for wear & tear, water damage, dry or moisture-related rotting, warping, splinters, splitting, or any excessive damage that could compromise structural integrity or harm cadets. All hardware will be inspected for structural integrity and re-tightened, any damaged screws will be replaced or augmented with additional hardware if needed.
Sanding & Re-Sealing: Obstacle Builders will sand and seal/re-seal all surfaces displaying any excessive damage, splitting, rough surfaces, or splinters.
Please Note that all natural wooden elements will splinter or become rough from repeated usage and no amount of expert maintenance can prevent all natural wear & tear or splinters. Instructors or school maintenance staff must inspect wooden surfaces weekly for any potential rough spots that should be sanded or re-sealed. This is part of standard Element Maintenance as outlined in your O-Course Contract.
Sealing of wooden surfaces consists of multiple coats of Thompson’s Water Seal or similar and excessively worn surfaces or areas with high amounts of body contact will receive multiple coats of a Premium Deck Resurfacer such as DeckOver or similar. Cracks larger than ¼” that do not pose any structural integrity issues will be filled with a high-strength expanding flexible waterproof sealer before sealing.
All sealant products are included with our Expert Maintenance Program
Hardware Inspection and Tightening: All hardware will be inspected for structural integrity and re-tightened, any damaged screws will be replaced or augmented with additional hardware if needed.

Impact Attenuation is defined as: A device, material, or system designed to prevent injury to persons by absorbing impacts through localized material deformation or displacement, to absorb the energy of an impact in a way that reduces the magnitudes of peak impact force and peak acceleration.
Obstacle Courses are inherently dangerous , impact abatement is only intended for lessening potential ground or structure impact-based injuries in the case of an accidental fall.
Existing Guidelines:
Please note that ASTM guidelines (F2479 and F1292 in particular) deal with playgrounds which are rated for use by children/adolescents up to 12 years old for free play which is dramatically different from JROTC usage which is instructor-led and participants are high school-aged young adults. Also, JROTC is a group membership activity that has certain requirements of conduct outlined in waivers signed by participants and guardians if under the age of 18.
Co-Founder Brett Stewart is proudly a voting member of ASTM and proudly a part of actively creating guidelines for obstacle courses as playground recommendations are not applicable.
Obstacle Builders designs and fabricates our elements with cadet safety first and foremost, with proper training and supervision the incidence rate of injury is drastically reduced.
PLEASE NOTE: If elements are to be used for “free play” playground-type open access and not overseen by an instructor we will decline to fabricate any/all elements.
The US Military has been working to develop a standard whilst greatly overshooting their target by incorporating 18” of rubber mulch across the board. This in and of itself creates multiple more problems than it solves:
- Exorbitant costs for hundreds of tons of mulch for the average US MIlitary O-Course as well as stacked 6x6 borders plus all the labor and equipment needed
- Far more importantly is the significant increase in injuries to cadets' and instructors' ligaments and connecting tissues (primarily ankles and knees) from walking, running, landing, etc. on the extremely unstable surface that’s created by 18” of rubber mulch.
Impact Abatement Recommendations
Here are the current recommended common-sense impact abatement guidelines while a formal ASTM guideline is being drafted and ratified:- Mulch should be concentrated in the below amounts in "impact areas” defined as under or 24” - 48” surrounding elements where falls may possibly occur.
Note: "Fall height” above is defined as the height measured by the closest body part to the ground during normal/prescribed instructor-led completion of that element.
We go through each element with our clients and provide recommendations and it is their decision on the size, depth, and number of elements you choose to purchase impact abatement in fall areas. About 80% of our clients nationwide choose to use existing natural surfaces such as grass underneath a majority of their element. Sand is also an option in some cases when the obstacle course is installed in an area that sees heavy rain runoff. Sand will most remain in place whereas mulch will be washed away.
As a final point to be made about impact abatement, for many cadets it creates a false sense of security whereby they abdicate a level of responsibility for conducting themselves appropriately. This is most notable in situations with crash pads, water, and can be applied to overly thick rubber mulch as well. Impact abatement is only intended for lessening potential injuries in the case of an accident only.
